There are many reasons why you might want to delete a conversation or a single message. You can delete unwanted messages from your chat history with just a few easy steps.
These steps will remove the conversations (or parts of them) permanently from your phone, but sometimes this is not enough. There is no way to avoid the possibility of someone reading your messages. Spy apps are easy to obtain and can be downloaded for free. To put it simply, they could still read deleted messages and conversations.
Since there are few people who know someone who will constantly monitor their chat history let’s focus on deleting the messages you don’t want to keep.
Delete Chat On Messenger
There are three ways to delete conversations. You can delete the conversations either from the app, the Facebook website or the Messenger website.
Let’s take them one by one:
Delete Conversations on Android or iPhone
The steps below will remove an entire chat conversation from your list and the chat history.
- Open the Messenger App
- Long-Press the Conversation you want to delete
- Choose “Delete Conversation” from the pop-up menu.
- Confirm your selection
You can remove all conversations from the app in just a few clicks!
What is the difference between archiving and deleting a conversation?
You will notice that when you long press a conversation in the steps above, a menu pops up. You can delete the conversation by selecting it from the menu. However, you also have the option of archiving the conversation.
By archiving a conversation, you hide it from your inbox until next time the conversation is active. Deleting the conversation completely removes the history of messages from your inbox.
To be clear, if you want to delete an entire conversation, including its history, then you need to delete the conversation, not archive it.
Delete Conversations with Your Computer
These steps will allow you to delete a chat and its history using your computer:
- Sign in to your Facebook account.
- Click on Messages at the top-right corner of the screen.
- Choose “See All In Messenger”, located at the bottom, to see all threads.
- Find the conversation that you wish to delete in this list.
- To send a gift, click the gear icon next to the name of the recipient.
- Click “Delete”
- Confirm your selection.
The conversation will be permanently removed from your list.
Delete Conversations in Messenger.com
If you use Messenger.com to communicate with Facebook instead of the main site then these steps will help you delete any conversations that are on Messenger.com.
- Messenger.com
- Select the conversation that you wish to delete.
- Click the gear icon next to the recipient’s Name.
- Click “Delete” in the pop-up menu.
- Confirm your selection.
- This is all you need to do to delete conversations.
- Delete specific messages on Messenger
Here are the steps you can take to remove a particular message from a discussion thread (again, separated by platform).
- iPhone or Android?
Press the message you wish to delete and hold it down for a long time.
You can find a trashcan at the bottom of the screen. Clicking on it will delete the message you have selected.
It will likely differ slightly depending on your device, but the results should be similar.
- Facebook Messenger
Follow all the steps to delete one message on Facebook. If you are using Messenger.com only, begin with the fourth step and continue to the end.
- Sign in to your Facebook account.
- Click on the message icon at the top-right corner of the screen.
- Click the “See All In Messenger”, link located at the bottom pop-up menu to see all the threads.
- You can find the conversation you wish to delete from this list.
- Find the message that you wish to delete.
You can view a menu by hovering the mouse over a message. Click on the three horizontal dots. The menu appears to the left if you’re deleting your own message. If it is someone elses message, then the menu appears on the right.
Click the icon with dots and then “Delete”. Then, confirm your selection.
Please be aware that the mobile Facebook website does not allow users to delete messages individually, or even view them on the mobile Messenger site. Use the mobile Messenger application with the above steps to delete individual messages and conversations.
